Every airport across the globe needs a control tower of some description. It’s the central hub for coordination of hundreds of safe and efficient aircraft movements through an airfield every day. Often, Control Towers offer airports the opportunity to create a landmark structure that is the symbolic reference for the airport and its status.

Key features

There are key technical design considerations to consider with any control tower structure. Arup discusses the most important elements for the control tower construction from planning, design to construction and the final ‘bringing into use’. It also features a small number of examples where Arup has engineered control towers across the globe from London, Sydney, India and Turkey – to name just a few. Our teams have worked on over 15 of the most prominent control towers across the world, each with their own technical considerations – some in geotechnically challenging areas, others suffering high wind factors or seismic issues.
